As you, fine reader, have already figured out, I was ecstatic that the Swiss Family Robins returned this year to my home. This whole cycle of life thing, combined with a feeling of tradition, really gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling deep down inside. It makes me feel connected to nature, not to mention very maternal.
Consequently, today was bittersweet. Just two days ago I discovered there were actually 4 babies in the nest. Yesterday was a big day for the family. With a lot of verbal encouragement from Mom and Dad, three of the babies left the nest. *sniffle sniffle* This little guy below was the littlest one of them all and needed some extra time to get going. He finally ventured out this morning and I was able to snap a pic before he flew off into the sunset.

Mom is patiently waiting with a wiggly worm to give her baby its last parental meal. The little guy was so nervous to leave his brick perch (and perhaps by my presence) that I saw him pee a bit too. Aww – how cute! Just minutes later, he was off and flying. *sniffle sniffle* They grow up so fast!

This whole scene reminds me of my own leaving the nest experience. I remember bawling at the McDonald’s on I-10, just outside of San Antonio. (I don’t think I wet my pants, but its possible.) My parents were driving me to college, chauffeuring their own littlest one off into the world. I was hardly hungry and just wanted more time to feel safe and taken care of. I was the girl who would never go to sleep-away camp, too afraid to be far from mom. Nine years later, I see Mom Robin offering strength and encouragement and know, that just like me, this little baby will be just fine.

Last year, a newlywed couple of robins nested on our front porch. This year, they returned, only to find the hanging basket that housed last year’s babies was no longer there! Being ingenious little creatures, they discovered that we had a new box propped up on the back porch.

This box is one of the pieces for the new shed, scheduled to be assembled today. I hoped that no eggs had been lain yet. Well you can’t fight nature. The babies are on their way.

We opened the package of instructions for the shed and it turns out that box, the floor kit, is not needed since we have a concrete pad. Well, thank goodness! Now we can just look forward to the little chirpies. Spring is so exciting!

Boy, spending some one-on-one time with weeds, spring’s budding greenery and mulch sure is hard on the body. It doesn’t help that I’m out of shape. (Note to self – get in better shape.)
I pulled a ton of easy weeds from this bed, mulched and added some marble stone for our sump pump drainage.

The bed around the tree didn’t need much weeding as I had mulched with leaves in the fall. I removed the leaves and added cedar mulch. The bed near the house was a different story. I removed no less than one hundred million dandelions.

The final 3 (of 4 original) stumps were removed from the back. This is real progress, but the back is still quite a disaster.

There is still hope for my black thumb – apparently I can grow onions. I found this in my hanging basket. Reminds me of Laurie’s new friend Victor.

While some may gauge spring’s arrival by the popping of crocus or the first daffodil blossoms, for me spring means forsythia!
Close-up of these little yellow buds of joy

Our shabby-not-quite-chic shed with another forsythia bush

And of course, the daffodils that started blooming last week
