Will work for food

In much of America, we are far removed from our food and its origins. We do not have to rely on our own skills, strength or cunning to procure a nourishing meal. Today’s convenience society allows for no cooking at all, if thats your thing. But with this come sacrifice. We are disconnected from the purity, simplicity and beauty of what we consume. Many fine writers have offered commentary on this issue, the consequences and potential solutions. I will offer my own tip through today’s breakfast.

As my coffee brewed, I took a few minutes to carefully peel and supreme a grapefruit and 2 oranges. The animalistic ritual of peeling citrus is quite meditative, as I focus on removing ever last speck of bitter pith.

I strained all the juice from my slices and squeezed the membranes into a glass, the juices running between my fingers. I slurped down half a glass of pulpy fresh orange and grapefruit juice. Room temperature, but pure heaven. I tosses the sections with 2 teaspoons of fresh local honey, taking the edge off the grapefruit. I enjoyed this simple meal in a dessert dish.

I gathered the peels and membranes, tossed in a handful of whole cloves and added several cups of water. I kept this mixture simmering on the stove nearly all day, relishing in the fresh and comforting smells of the breakfast I so deeply enjoyed.

I didn’t set out today to have an experience with my food, but it happened. I found peace in peeling, health in eating and calm in the scent of my work. So my advice: be mindful and your food will work for you, nourishing your body and soul.

I’d never heard of ’supreme’ as a verb prior to reading this. I gather its some sort of preparation technique. I shall look it up,, and then figure out how to work it into a conversation, thus amazing my friends. Friend. Well, wife. Won’t even try with the daughter.

Think of it as getting rid of all the bad parts. See tomorrow’s post for a video.
