Nourishing Traditions
Sitting down to supper with your family, whether a grand holiday affair or simply a Wednesday night between scouts and American Idol, invokes the warm and fuzzy feelings of goodness, of comfort, of home. The Food Issue of the New Yorker is on newsstands now. In it you will not only find articulate commentary and creative writing, but a series of 8 essays called “Family Dinners”, spanning generations and the globe.
Even more compelling is the feature “New York Local: Eating the fruits of the five boroughs” , which highlights the localism movement and illustrates that slow, local food is for city mice too! My favorite snip from this piece:
To eat something local is to meet someone nearby.
This thought shows us the importance of bringing community back to your table of goodness and the necessity of reaching out to your extended family for true nourishment.
