Sweet Old Fashioned Goodness

I heard a song tonight while out for a drive. It’s called “Sweet Old Fashioned Goodness” and sung by country star Craig Morgan. It really caught my attention and gave me a launch point for introducing Midwest Neurotica to the world. A couple of lines are below.

“Wind chimes in a weeping willow
Biscuits light as feather pillows…”

Buttermilk-Biscuits

We’re all a little bit nuts and all the stresses of the world just make it worse. We long for balance. To get there, we try to go back to the basics, to find joy in simple things and lighten our lives. Sometimes we invoke nostalgic images, as Morgan does in this tune. In this blog, I’ll share my thoughts and favorite things, mostly focused on creating a cottage life in harmony with the modern world and the environment.

My goal is to keep it practical and everyday - to help center your life with beautiful ideas and heartwarming anecdotes. You don’t have to live in the midwest (I don’t), to find your roots and return to your own heartland.

I grew up on a midwestern farm, and your post brought back some great memories for me. Thank you! Here are a few on my goodness list:

sitting on the porch swing as the sun sets
bottle feeding a baby lamb
hunting mushrooms on a warm april day
morning mist/fog on a pond
crickets and frogs singing in the evening
swinging on a rope from a big old oak tree
riding bareback through a shallow stream
everyone waving as they pass on the road
a huge garden w/ sunflowers in bloom
eating strawberries straight from the patch

This was such an evocative list, and w/the exception of the Corvette, reminds me a lot of my own childhood. Ah. Lightning bugs.
